Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Secret Sandwich
Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce, a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down. The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa! Weighs one pound. Costs Four Bucks.

A Tale of Two Stories
Wednesday, August 23, 2006
...Both from Politics Vermont.

Story One:

8/22/2006
Tarrant releases Amber Alert Ad against Sanders

Republican US Senate candidate Rich Tarrant released another volley of television and radio ads focusing on Independent Rep. Bernie Sanders vote regarding the amber alert and prison time for criminals.

Click on the picture to view the ad.

Also, we have learned that Republican US House candidate Martha Rainville should be hitting the airwaves pretty soon. In addition, Republican US Senate candidate Greg Parke will also be going on the airwaves in his bid for the GOP nomination against Tarrant.

What do you think of the ad?

Story Two:

8/17/2006
Sanders Releases New Ad

Just a heads up that the Sanders campaign introduced a new ad to the public a few days ago that features farmers, a state representative, a student and a host of other people. Click here, to view.

Click here to view. Keep in mind that Democrat Peter Welch and Republican Rich Tarrant have also released new ads in the last couple of days. All ads are very well done and focus on specific issues. Tarrant's ad, however, is not doing so well right now on the net. We are having a tough time getting a good feed and a clear picture from the campaign website. Hopefully, after reading this they can correct the problem.

Now:

Compare the two stories above from Politics Vermont carefully.

The titles: You get what Tarrant’s ad is about (Amber Alert) and the phrase “against Sanders.” You get no information about Sanders’s ad from the title of that story.

The Tarrant story Introduction: Tarrant is the actor. “Rich Tarrant released another volley…” The phrase “another volley” serves to double the psychic gravitas the of the “current volley” in the mind of the reader. Then we get some red meat. “…of television and radio ads focusing on Independent Rep. Bernie Sanders vote regarding the amber alert and prison time for criminals.” “Ohhh,” thinks the reader. “What did Bernie do?” We get the phrase “focusing on Independent Rep. Bernie Sanders,” which is what Tarrant wants us to be doing. We get “amber alert and prison time for criminals.”

The Sanders story Introduction: Sanders role is more passive- as part of a campaign. “…the Sanders campaign introduced a new ad to the public a few days ago…” The phrase “a few days ago,” let’s you know exactly how important the reader should consider the release of the Bernie ad. Notice it isn’t “another ad.” It’s just “a” new ad. How are we hearing about this? By way of a “heads up.” A decidedly unsenatorial method of communication. How is Bernie’s ad depicted in this paragraph? By loosely meandering through a list of archetypes in the ad, but failing to report on the ad’s actual message.

Hmmmm. Yeah…

The Tarrant story main body: “Also, we have learned that Republican US House candidate Martha Rainville should be hitting the airwaves pretty soon.” That’s fine, but there’s no link to distract us with like the Welch link in the Sanders story. Then we get yet another mention of Tarrant in the context of his primary race with park.

Then, “Strategic Perception Inc.” the PR firm that writes Politics Vermont, actually tries to get free blogger focus group feedback on the ad they produced themselves! Can you friggin’ believe the chutzpa?! "What do you think of the ad?" I think it sucked!!

The Sanders story main body: “Keep in mind that Democrat Peter Welch and Republican Rich Tarrant have also released new ads in the last couple of days.” Take what we just told you about Bernie’s ad, and move it over in your mind to make room for thoughts about Welch (There’s a link to Welch’s site to distract away from Bernie) and, who else? Tarrant! “All ads are very well done and focus on specific issues.” Read: “Tarrant’s ad is well done and focuses on specifics.” Bear in mind- this is supposedly a story about Sanders’s ad, not Tarrant’s! But what comes next? “…Tarrant's ad, however, is not doing so well right now on the net. We are having a tough time getting a good feed and a clear picture from the campaign website….” Well that is intriguing! What’s the problem? “Will I get to see Tarrant’s ad?” thinks the reader. (Notice it’s “the” campaign website, not “their” campaign website.) Then PolVT has the gall to use this story to transmit a message to their partners back at Tarrant HQ to adjust the fine tuning. “Hopefully, after reading this they can correct the problem.” And they know they are reading, to be sure!

But the thing that tipped me off to the smoke in mirrors in these two stories, was the links to the ads themselves. For the Tarrant Ad, you can click anywhere in the 358x192 pixel screen shot and be taken directly to a Tarrant propaganda site where the ad starts playing. There is no screenshot from Bernie’s ad, just a photo of him. It’s not the worst photo, but it’s not the best either, and if you click it, it just gets blown up. It won’t take you to the ad. For that you have to click the words “Click here, to view.” Embedded in the story. Any computer geek or ad man will tell you how important the size of your link is on a webpage. The link to Tarrant’s ad has to be about fifty times bigger than the link to Bernie’s ad.

Are you people starting to see what I’m talking about yet?

Yeah. That "click here to view." is in the Sanders story twice is no accident either. One links, one doesn't. They know a bunch of people will hit the wrong "link" and assume it isn't working.

Thank you, Haik, for exposing Politics Vermont. Every picture of Tarrant that they publish is a great picture, but every picture of Bernie is a bad picture.

These four unidentified people somehow have access to unidentified GOP sources! Give me a break!
