I am officially nominating Ian Carlton "Best City Council President Ever." The "Auctioneer" is fast, fair and friendly- expeditious, enlightened and engaging if you will, and there may never be another quite like him or quite as good.
Carlton is a "Yalie," while one of the candidates seeking to replace him went to Harvard. Which one, you ask? Here's a hint- Not Kurt Wright.
But while Nathan K Wright, may lack an Ivy League education- I'd have to bet on him to win this thing. For one, everybody knows the Progs tend to use every rule, loop-hole and lever available to their advantage. That's smart politics, but at the same time, the Dems are still a bit stung by Hinda's surprise loss to Bob and may not be interested in having young Mr. Ashe stack all the committees with his partisan progressive pals. With only three Republicans on the council, the Dems realize Kurt would not be able to do that. Plus, there may be a teeny bit of payback for the Dems in denying mayor Kiss a Progressive presidency even if they don't run someone for it themselves.
I may have just biased the results of the following web poll, but I hope you all realize that no internet-based poll with self-selected participants is scientific in any way. These things are just for fun and/or propaganda, FYI. I know about these things because I worked for Macro Market Research for two years in high school.
Heh heh. "Slack-ro." Everybody worked there.

Wow. What a smart move by the Democrats, electing Kurt Wright. That'll show 'em. Oy.
ReplyDeleteHeard from more than one Dem Councilor that they will be voting for Kurt.
ReplyDeleteDavid Rogers
No wonder there's a third party in Vermont.
ReplyDeleteGo Kurt go, much better choice than Tim Ashe, Tim is an asshole
ReplyDeleteNow, now Loyal, that's not nice.
ReplyDeleteIf the Dems put up Joan Shannon, She'd steal it out from under both these guys.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case, why wouldn't they? They care more about sticking it to Progressives that about serving the people of Burlington? Freaky.
ReplyDeleteSo much fucking politics on the city council.
ReplyDeletepoint of clarification - Kurt is definitely at least as much of an asshole as Ashe.
Do the dems know they are being used here? Do they remember Curley telling everyone Hinda was the devil incarnate and to vote for Bob as their 2nd choice?
As if the Republicans didn't love the Progs enough (At least when they aren't talking about IRV). this will seal the deal.
If that's the case, why wouldn't they?
ReplyDeleteMaybe Joan has a life, that's why.
None of the Democrats want the responsibility? Don't have the time? Don't give a damn about what a reactionary Wright is? Excessively lame?
ReplyDeleteNone of the Democrats want the responsibility?
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me they have all stepped up, put themselves out there and are doing a ton of the work for the city for almost nothing.
You on the other hand won't even attach your name to your blog comments. In my world that is "excessively lame."
Kurt Wright isn't going to hurt anything as president if he wins.
Thanks for reading BurlingtonPol. Visit often!
Fine an anonymous comment is lame. It's hard to find description for democrats who would put him in charge of the city council. God bless 'em for serving, but if they're too tired maybe they should find another outlet. It's frankly irresponsible if you call yourself a Democrat. If you think Burlington is a nice place, even with whatever problems may exist, you have to conclude right wingers aren't the ones who made it a nice place.
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel better Anonymous, a Wright presidency would certainly aid in a Kiss re-election. Burlingtonians like balance, fairness and people who work accross party lines.
ReplyDeleteThey do? Then they must really abhor people who would vote for Wright just to stick it to the Progs.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anyone who would vote for Wright "just to stick it to the Progs." That's too simplistic.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all "stick it?" What is that? A line from Seinfeld?
When I said in the post "there may be a teeny bit of payback for the Dems" I meant incidentally.
The actual reasons for voting for Kurt over Tim do not include "payback" or 'sticking it.' They do include the setting of a civil tone in Burlington. I don't know if you've noticed, Caller, but there are an aweful lot of Republicans in this city. Like, half or something. Their machinery sucks, to say the least, but their numbers do warrent this largely symbolic gesture of good will. Kurt only has two other Republicans to stack committees with.
Plus- obviously Tim is only thirty. He's younger than I am for goodness sake!
I want to say for Tim that maybe he'd run the meetings a little faster than Kurt because he's a quicker thinker- but I can't because I think he'd bring ideology into the meetings more (philosophical pontification) and Kurt would just be more inclined to conduct the city's business and call it a night.
Well that's that. Kurt's got it, unless Joan get's in by Tuesday.
It's not good to try to totally destroy an opposing political party. The Dems are showing grace. If Kurt wins, it would behoove everyone for Tim and the Progs to be gracious about it. Actually, I have no doubt about Bob Kiss. He's the man. But the other Progs. You know who you are.
Oy!
