Odum leaves Blogging, Dow Drops 416 points

Update- Right after I wrote the post below the row of stars, I noticed all the other blogs in the world (our world, anyway) have covered the same story. I guess the Snarky angle is way off base. I guess this was more about the 2nd VT Republic folks publishing where Odum works and implying they are paying for him to… what? Attack them? Who cares? I don’t really get this story. But it does remind me we’re all about a paycheck away from going off the air. If that makes any sense.

*****

Odum is leaving GMD. He posted a farewell there and Baruth followed it up, so it’s official. If it was just Odum saying he himself quit, I wouldn’t be too sure. But if Phillip writes about it, you can pretty much hang it on your wall. And yes, this is true even if Baurth is just basing his post on Odum’s post and nothing more. I trust VDB more than my own blog. It doesn’t have to make sense. Read my disclaimer.

I think it’s public knowledge there was something happening between John Odum and a Mr. Snarky Boy. Just last week Odum revealed Snark’s ID to be this guy.

Freaky. Whether this Colby guy is Snaky, and whether Snarky had something to do with Odum’s departure, we don’t know for sure. We do know Snarky has written some very not nice things about Odum. Frankly I don’t see why Odum would be a target for harrassment. He is a great political blogger, but I’ve always found him to be a pretty mainstream Democrat- he never said anything too radical or outright offensive. I would worry way more about the some of the shit I say at Carpetbagger. Odum’s very likable it seems to me. Then again maybe those likeable, mainstream qualities of his drove some already crazy-radical more crazy. Who knows? I just hope it all turns out ok for Odum.

Odum announced he’s out yesterday. That’s a loss and I’m sorry to hear it. Of course I jumped over to SnarkyBoy to see what he had to say about it and I saw his post, also from Monday, called “A Day to Remember” but it wasn’t about Odum. It was about skiing and it was posted hours before Odum’s post.

So there’s that.

Shay vs. Odum vs. Me

Shay lashes out a little at the Dems this week, as if they may end up destroying BT with their bad attitudes, although his column doesn’t address how the seventeen million might be repaid. On the other hand, Odum thinks it’s the Progs who might end up destroying BT with their bad attitudes. Odum also does not discuss how BT might refinance its debt.

Shay also charges Dems “rallied” for Adam Cate last year. I don’t remember it that way. It seems to me that in general, the whole council was trying to figure out what the hell was going on with Cate. I don’t recall anyone really ‘rallying’ for anyone, except perhaps for Bob Kiss who “rallied” for Cate’s right to privacy in the whole matter.

Anyhow, the sad fact is BT’s death may have been a fait accompli when Nulty walked. He wanted to expand, and obviously he knew what the hell he was talking about. The simplest explanation for what might have happened was Leopold got all up in Nulty’s face at some point and Nulty was like “fuck this.”

Nulty is a Jedi and Leopold is a Sith. We’re left with the Sith. And nobody knows where the seventeen million is coming from. It’s nothing to do with bad attitudes. Most new businesses fail. Most experiments fail. Things fail. That’s life.

The writing is on the wall. So bring on the finger pointing Shay and Odum and whoever else. I’m glad the city spent ten thousand dollars to run fiber up to my house, but I’m sure I’ll end up paying for that myself. And to be honest, I’m not that much of a geek. I’m still running coaxial cable into my high def flat screen, and the computer I’m running is made out of balsa wood and duck tape. It doesn’t know cable from fiber. Neither do I.

When I first got Burlington Telecom hooked up, the bill started out at $100 even per month. Now it’s crept up to $120 somehow. If Comcast offers me a better deal, I have no compunction at all about jumping ship.

What do I care? I have a family to feed.

Political BBQ 2009

This was the fourth annual Political Barbacue and Hamburger Summit hosted by Vermont Daily Briefing and Green Mountain Daily. Unlike the first three years when the BBQ was at North Beach, this one was in Montpelier. My family and I love this yearly event. Here’s some photos from today with captions underneath.

BurlingtonPol Beats Blurt II

Hey I got more traffic than the Seven Days staff blog “Blurt” again on Sunday. Final visitor score: BurlingtonPol- 76, Blurt- 72. This was a come-from-behind victory due mostly to John Odum’s GMD post on the Douglas Push poll that I was lucky enough to participate in today.

Cathy Resmer shouldn’t feel too bad though, as Blurt does indeed ‘crush me on a regular basis.’ By the way, props to Cathy for moderating the discussion on Shay’s Blurt post about SVR and the LOS. The ugly comments from the VNN freaks on that sting are a wake-up call to decent people. Disturbing and incredibly stupid.

Political BBQ 2008

The family and I are just back from the 3rd annual Political Barbecue and Hamburger Summit hosted by Philip Baruth and John Odum. Thanks to our fabulous hosts, the thing was a rockin’ success once again.

The crowd size was similar to those of the last two years, even if its composition was a little different. We didn’t see Charity there, and of course Bill was out of town- but most of the pillars were in attendance- Steve Benen, Jack McCullough, Jay Vos, Julie Waters, JD Ryan, Christian Avard, Neil Jensen, Linda from the Northeast Kingdom, and many many more. There was the whole Brattleboro crew including Steve and Gorty from the radio.

As for politicians, we had Anthony Pollina who genuinely seemed to remember our one meeting 19 years ago in Bernie’s office. “You’re still around?” he asked me. Gaye Symmington was there, and Chris Pearson… Kesha Ram showed up toward the end… Mark Larson was hanging out. Neither Ed or TJ made it, but I guess we’ll forgive them. Selene wasn’t there either- but not because of a birthday party as I mistakenly said in a previous post, but because she had to attend an event in another part of the state with Peter Welch. I heard her dad was there, but I didn’t see him.

We brought a few of Poopsie’s unbelievable grape leaf lamb dolmas which got gobbled up quickly. And the lake was relatively clean too so Poopsie, Koko, Yanna and I splashed around for a while. Poopsie ate a brat. Koko ate a hot dog and I ate a bunless burger with ketchup. Poopsie wouldn’t let Philip toss the leftover watermelon, so I had to find a way to carry it home.

I love the blogger barbecue and have genuinely had a good time all three years. That’s weird for me because I generally hate social events like that- but among the pols and the bloggers, I actually feel like I belong. And that’s special.

Good times. Good times.

I coulda been a contender

Here’s a little something from the email archives. It’s the only time in my life anyone ever challenged me to mud wrestle. Bill Simmon had the best response to the following email: “Unsubscribe.”
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2006

From: “Snarky Boy
Subject: Mud Wrestling Challenge!

To: Christian Avard, Philip Baruth, Haik Bedrosian, Steve Benen, Neil Jensen, John Odum, Adam Quinn, Heavenly Ryan, Bill Simmon

Okay, fellas, let’s get real. Here’s the challenge: We get down and dirty in the mud and see — once and for all – who amongst us is the Master of the Blogging Universe.

Go here to see the details.

I’m ready. I’m willing. And I await your words.

Grrrrr,

Dean to attend BBQ (Maybe)

Wow. Looks like Odum got Howard Dean to agree to go to the Second Annual Blogger Barbecue at North Beach on July 15 (1-5pm). Well, sort of. It wasn’t a hard commitment, but at least Dean told somebody to write it down.
